Default convertible top advice

I need to redo my top now. It is BAD! Any advice? I cannot find any good threads on it. I want it like or better than new so should I remove and replace the rivets? If so how do you do that? Can the new ones be set too tight and cause it to bind?

Is doing the top yourself difficult?

I refurbished my frame and I learned that the replacement rivets are pretty soft. You can over smash them and make them tight.
Not knowing the overall condition of your frame and car and how much time and/or money you want to spendmake advise hard to give.
What I did--clean the frame up and and repaint as needed. A few pits on a rusty part are not a big deal if cleaned and repainted. If you have a loose joint/rivet, try to smash it a little to tighten up. A new one may not be any better, expecially if the hole is egged. Some parts, like the front rib/bow? that clamps to the windshield are mostly hidden, so if you have rust pin holes, you don't have to dissemble it and weld it. Clean, bondo, paint.
I bought a Al Knoch top because I got a deal and it is suposed to be a good one. I did take it to a top shop to have it installed. I am a pretty good mechanic, but I figured this is probably a 1 time deal and I wanted it done right. I have seen some diy installs that looked pretty bad. I don't know if you can go back and fix a bad install. Most excess material is trimmed off.
There are dvd and printed info out there to help you if you do it yourself.
So, lots of latitude here. All depends on time, money, results.
