I thought that the earlier years were the briggs and stratton locks.

This is correct. Different looking altogether in looks, however, I believe the functionality is the same. If you're looking for "correctness" you need to match not only the type of lock and key, but the alpha key code too.
Each year has an assigned alpha key code (slot configuration) and should match the spare tire and the glove box lock sets. This alpha code is a single upper case letter stamped in the head of the key. Beyond that, each key has a cut code (I'm probably using the wrong terminology for this) which was stamped in the knock out. This code tells a locksmith how the key is cut to fit the matched locks' tumblers.
