Side pipe inserts

Default Side pipe inserts

I see a lot of questions about different types of inserts for Hooker style side pipes and I have read many trying to decide what to do with the burnt out set that came on my car. I've spent many years with big cubic inch recip and turboprop engines sitting a few feet to my left and while I like a engine to sound like an engine I like to talk to my wife and not be totally bombarded by noise when I drive. I also did not want the permanent ringing in my ear to get worse. The burnt out inserts were just not getting the job done. Here are a few pictures of my solution that should be pretty self explanatory. I have less than $100 invested.


Hooker inserts cut about 4.25"


Magnaflow 18" glass pack 2.25"id


Straight thru shot



Mocked up prior to welding



Through shot prior to welding

After welding I painted with high temp paint and installed. The results were exactly what I wanted, deep head turning idle, loud when you open the throttle, and that great Magnaflow sound at cruise. It is very comfortable on the highway with the 5spd transmission.

Looks cool.....gotta have a sound clip though!

I want to take my inserts out and I cant get them out. Looks nice what you are doing.

I dropped the open end on a rubber mat a few times and they slid out. Maybe spray some WD40 or similar in both ends around ends of inserts and let it soak a while.
