Default '82 CE... clear coat?

Hi All,
Just signed up with the forum as I have my very first Corvette - an '82 CE. Always liked the cars since I was a kid, now I was in the position to purchase a relatively low mile (60K) car for maybe a little more than it was intrinsically worth, but it is in pretty good shape. The cross-fire even works!

I have always thought that this color combination was one of the nicest through the years, and since I couldn't affordably find '78 Pace Car (my first choice!), this one appeared locally. Anyway, I've never even seen one first hand until I went to see mine and was not real sure about the paint/decal combination. I'm in the sign and graphics industry, so I'm quite familiar with how things are applied and I was certain that these were applied over the factory paint. However, mine has the decals underneath a clear coat.. which makes me wonder if a) it came from the factory that way or b) a previous owner did that because of an accident (not readily identifiable) or just wanted to protect the decals. I don't care either way, I love the car. Just wanted to see if anyone knew for sure how they actually came from the factory!
