Hey guys just curious, I saw a 74 the other day and liked that it doesn't have the two bumpers protruding out of the front bumper like the 78 bumper and that they offered a center grille which i think also helps clean up the look. My question is whether or not the grilles from a 78 bumper will work with a 74 bumper?
A '73-'74 front bumper will not fit a '78 without significant modification. The grills are the least of your worries.
For instance, notice on the '74 that the fiberglass in between the emblem and bumper comes to a point. You'll notice on the '78 that the bumper actually turns into the nose of the car just below the emblem.
Hide Quickview CORVETTE BUMPER - 80 THRU 82 STYLE FRONT
Description1975-1979
Uses 1975-79 grilles.
These custom front bumpers allow you to give your 73-79 Corvette an 80-82 look without modifying your fenders. Available for use with original or 80-82 grilles.
...have a shop lob off the two black bumpers on the 78 and fliberglass to get the same look?...
If your bumper cover is stock, it is urethane and not fiberglass. The bumperettes could be shaved, but the filling would need to be urethane. Keep in mind there are reinforcements and crash bar material behind your bumperettes.
...Also would the 74 center grille work on the 78 bumper?...
Not without further surgery to your existing bumper cover.
If you want to get an idea of what can be involved with what you want to do, purchase the 74 and 78 assembly instruction manuals and compare the front bumper installations on each.
You can do it but it will need body work to make it fit. I plan on adding a 74 to my 76 as I to do not like the bumperettes and want the center open for added cooling. It can be done just not bolt on. I don't care about the grilles but you can always try to make them work. Here's link
