So I bought this 71 car a couple years ago as a parts car. Now another project has come along and I need the garage space so the 71 is finally getting torn apart. I would like to recouple some $$ by selling the frame. Question I have is, on the right side in front of the rear tire the frame has a rusted out area, (see picture). The rest of the frame seems solid, some surface rust but no other holes. Is this frame worth repairing? Value as is? It is a roller as it sits, but I would like to keep the tires and wheels Thanks in advance.
Just my opinion, being a repaired frame, it will always be just that, even if it's expertly done. Maybe I'm wrong and there's a shortage of them and in that instance, that might just pass, but you'd have to find an identical piece to splice or it'd look decidedly 'different'.
A lot of the early C3 restorers, I'd imagine would want it right, right off the bat and I suspect they'd take a pass and keep looking.
You can buy just that piece including the reinforcement plate that is inside to provide more structure during jacking.
Caladonia and others sell it. Including an inside piece used to reinforce the weld butt joint.
But with that much rust, I'm surprised that the rest of the frame is in good shape. The frame rusts on the outside as well as the inside. I'd go over it with a welders pick and listen for a nice ring sound or a dull thud.
Better have a good welder doing this. You'll need to make good measurements when cutting the old piece and the new piece or the number 3 mount will not line up
