I've already replaced my dash lighting with Led bulbs. Now I want to replace the interior dome light bulb with a led type bulb. I know the original bulb is a 212-2. How many smds should I use so that it's not too dim? Has anyone done this and what did you use for a led bulb?
Check Amazon.com...search for "212-2 LED bulb" and many will likely pop up. While I haven't tried the 212-2 bulb in one of my older cars, I did get several and each works very well...the light is whiter and brighter, plus the advantage of no heat to hurt the lens and they use less power.
They are more expensive than the original incandescent bulbs but should never require replacing.
Go enter 212-2 bulb led on ebay tons pop up,
White LED will be brighter than stock bulb in most cases,
I have purple, true purple hard to find and do not put out much light,
I order leds both loose and bulbs from overseas off ebay all the time some get here faster than others but it's a bargain you cant beat,
I got 20 "peanut" leds shipped for the price of one in a parts store in town....
Yep I got my led bulbs on ebay also. I was curious if anyone could tell me the number of smds on the bulb that they used. Don't want to go too bright or too dim. Guess for the price I could buy some different brightness leds and go by trial and error. I used leds that had 10 smds for the dash lighting. Sooo...

On my '70 I ran a strip of LED's behind the rear window trim and it works great. Lots more light and, with the light coming from the front of the compartment, you can actually see things back there.

Smd is just surface mount device nothing to do with light out put,
surface mount is like strips and they are normally 5050 or 3528 5050 are bigger on the strip and 3528 are smaller but more of them so either strip could be brighter depending.
Just buy a bulb made to be a dome lite they appear brighter because of being true white.

LED output can fool with some people, for example I have some purple/violet leds and even ones made to fit dome lights they offer a faint glow, no real lighting so some would say they are low light but no they are high they are a wavelength that doesn't put out much visible light.
This purple on our trike is actually low light output but the color made the difference,
