My 1973 corvette needs new tires. I am considering going to a plus size p255/60r15 on stock 8in rally wheels. Will that be any problem without making modifications of any kind.
In '78 that size became an option. In the rear there are no issues. In the front there could be. The factory shaved the front edge and rear corner of the front fenders so there would be no tire rub. Look at any '78 Pace Car to see what I'm talking about. There are many C3s running this combination but there is no guarantee that they will fit on your car without rubbing. You need to "test fit" to be sure. I doubt that's the answer you want to hear but that's better than a cracked fender.
I'm running 255/60-15 BFGs on my 73 with stock wheels. The ONLY issue is a very slight rub on the driver's side frame when turned to the left at lock. An I put the emphasis on slight; just enough to polish the frame paint and I hit the lock position backing out of my driveway every trip.
Only that the very wide tires may "tramline" along any ruts in the road.
IMHO (based on my experience on the lousy streets we have here in New Jersey), the 225/70 or 235/60 tires ride better and have a nicer steering feel.
For the sake of being able to rotate the daily driver tires every year, I just installed PepBoy 235/70R-15 tires on 8" rims.
The tires were inexpensive---I didn't want to put quality tires on the front of my project until I was sure that I had all the front and rear alignment "bugs" taken care of.
I also wanted to lower the highway-RPM of the engine by going with larger diameter tires. There is about 1 1/2 inches of cleatance between the fender lip and the top of the tire when the car is lowered to the ground (the wheel really FILLS the wheel well!)
Once the car is painted and ready for long road-trips, I will put BFG RWL tires on the car (I will reconsider the tire size at that time)
(I think I will take a razor and shave the Futura GLS off the tires.....LOL!)
