In the past, I have always lifted out engines on a large eye bolt secured to the rafters in my garage. After a garage redo, I lost the eye bolt and now use a hydraulic engine hoist. My problem is, all the lifts on the market seem to have too short a lifting arm to come in from the front of the car and center the lifting hook over the engine.
I was forced to take the engine out from the side which was quite a bit harder than from the front.
Does anyone know of a company that makes a long arm lift that works on the C3??
I have a hoist that was modified to be long reach for motor work on my 71 Monte Carlo. which also has a long nose. Still have that one, now have one of these as well:
i kinda thought most of the cherry pickers you can buy have an adjustable lift arm where you can extend it up over the engine from the side of the car? but will depend on the capacity of the lift when extended out all the way. the cheaper ones may not have a large enough hydraulic cylinder to lift if you are lifting the entire engine and tranny.
a medium duty one from harbor freight should work. try lifting from the side of the car.
Here is how I did it and it worked very well. Removed the front right wheel and extended the cherry picker all the way out. I had no problems with this method.
