I have a all Original 69 350/300 T400 Vet and it has been a joy to drive, but yesterday i got onto the freeway and drove for an hour with no issues until on the way back, as i got to about 90Kh the car lost power and as i pumped the gas it was back firing, so i pulled over to the shoulder and put in N and it reved freely as well as idled like it should.
pulled back out and the same all the way back home for about 60ks
when got off the highway i was at the lights and i gave it a boot full and it
went like it should (even chirped the rear wheels hitting second)
arrived home and it idled like it always does.
the carb is original and has had a complete overhaul 1 year ago.
i have changed the leads as well.
i would really like some help with this one guys as you are the go to people.
1. When is the last time you checked the condition of the cap, rotor, points, condensor and advance weights?
2. How old are the plug wires, can you test them with an ohm meter, 1k per foot is the max.
3. How many miles on the plugs?
4. When the carburetor was overhauled did you change the inline gas filter?

Interesting..Unfortunately I don't have the sophistication to help. Although your car is pretty exotic and rare for Australia, it's carburator and distributor/ignition coil system is pretty much similar to the Holdens and Fords of the late 1960's. An older mechanic from these days of yesteryears might have some good insight. I had to seek out one of these greybeards to tune up my 68. His auto repair business was ran by his son. He was a leftover from the 60's. He modified my carb; jets and power valve, and redid the vacuum advance cannister and dizzy advance weights...just like a different car when I got it.
......................
If the car is running out of power at speed and backfiring...it could be a fuel starvation problem..lack of fuel will cause lack of power and also lack of fuel will create a lean condition which can cause backfiring. Also, a severe problem with vacuum/centrifugal advance will cause lack of power and backfiring. Good luck!!! Let us know what the solution was!
You may have picked up some water at the local gas station. It happens. Drop in a can of gas line anti-freeze (non-methanol type) and see if the problem goes away although it seems to have done so already. But for a couple of $s try this treatment.
I would try replacing the coil. I was having trouble with my 72, it had not been running well for a while, ran like it had a skip at steady RPM and was hard to keep running at a stop light, but seemed like it would smooth out under acceleration. Finally it made a slight cough/pop and shut off. I got a new coil and solved the problem.
