I'm getting bad backfire (really afterfire) out the right exhaust only. Mainly when going uphill as the engine begins calling for more fuel. I know the timing is right, I checked it with timing light. Has new plugs, points, condenser. Dwell has been set. Starts easy and sounds good (until the backfiring starts, that is). If it does it when it calls for more fuel, does that mean the issue is in the carb? Thanks for any help.
A few things come to mind,
Vacuum leak, sticky valve, valve spring, worn cam, carb not shooting both sides correctly, and while you believe plugs and wires are good I have seen a plug and or wire do this...even new ones.

I have not changed the plug wires yet. That would be the easiest thing to do. I thought maybe the fact that it only does it out the right side and never the left might eliminate something to someone who has had a lot experience with this.

Problems with fire power seems to get worse under load....
A bad wire, it could be arching etc,
I had a wire laying on a header tube once which did something like this,
Open in hood engine running in the dark, see if you see any blue lightening around the wires when you goose it....
