I replaced all the fuel hoses, strainer, and filler neck seal on my 77 gas tank. Now I'm trying to put the tank back in. The neck seal on a 77 is thin like a pancake and doesn't really have any body to it. When I got the tank "in place", the seal is tight against the rear of the opening, but there is still a good size gap at the front. I've tried to twist and pry to see if the tank will go into place better, but that's all I've got so far. It's as if something is in the way. Doesn't seem to be the hoses. Am I correct to assume that the seal is to be up tight against the tank cover? That would only make sense to me. I've pulled the tank back out to get a fresh start.
I have a 77 and the take seal is same as yours. Its not really going to fit tight all around as is seems it should. Its only purpose is to catch gasoline that you would overflow when filling at the gas station....so just don't let it overflow! But, even if it did this would catch some of it even without it positioned as you would like it. It has a lip around the perimeter that helps.
Also, there is a hose attached to the front that runs down and slamped to the right side of the differential crossmember to dump the fuel away if you overflow. SO you really can't rotate it much.
