I considered posting this in the Off Topic section but after reviewing some of the topics posted there, I thought this was more worthy of being posted here where warbird enthusiasts like myself would see it and appreciate the historical significance of these American heroes.
I saw that in O/T months ago but it sure is worth another look. What strikes me is how young people were when they went to war many years ago! And they are in their 80s and 90s now.
Those are awesome photos. I'd love to see more of those LIFE photos, especially the color shots of the TBD Devastators.
It is great to see more warbird enthusiast here, I'm Assistant Editor for Warbird Digest and have shot (and flown in) a number of warbirds over the last seven years.
Some years back I had the privilege of flying in and co-piloting a B17. That is one of the highlights of my life. Seeing them in movies cannot come close to experiencing the sounds, smells, vibrations, etc., of actually being there. The men who flew these planes in sub-zero temperatures while being shot at and shooting back...have my undying respect. They took part in giving us the freedoms we take for granted...they risked and too often...gave everything.
A couple of us C3 corvette enthusiasts rent a hanger at one of the local small airports. Love it!! We get to see a number of those old war birds fly in and out as well as the ones that live here.
