I'm starting to assemble an engine that has been packed up for a while. Some of the parts have light surface rust. It's light enough that rubbing alcohol and paper towels will remove it but it takes a while and doesn't work well in rough places. What's the easiest way to clean these parts before WD40 and assembly?
Depending on the part, a light (red or grey depending on the brand) scotchbrite pad lubricated with WD40 will wipe light surface rust off and get into bumpy surfaces pretty well.
he cider vinegar is a very light acid so it works (also good for preparing ribs for the BBQ) but will attack machined/polished surfaces as well so be careful where you spray it.

That's a pretty good idea. I thought about Scotchbrite but there are so many to choose from that it's almost funny. I also didn't realize that the nylon pads have abrasives mixed in such as Aluminum oxide. I'll have to do a ittle research to pick the appropriate one but spraying WD-40 on the pad should help reduce any harm as well.
