Lets see.
Started with a pinion seal leak.
Ended up rebuilding rear assembly, trailing arms, new u joints in drive shaft and half shalfs, new liners and painted leaf spring, strut rods bushings, new shocks, rear ebrake cable, cleaned and painted everything that came off, removed after market undercoating. cleaned up fenderwells and hardware. etc.
$10 seal ended up being $2000 job. And 3 months time, Yes, the ole "while I'm at it" LOL
Started at as replacing a door that had broken lock mechanism &also broken window mechanism .
..almost 2 years later , I'm where I'm at now . New door , PLUS , a new paint job , complete new interior ( dash , seats , carpet , door panels , etc ) and working on undercarriage / suspension now....Lol
Pretty typical . Most corvettes were abused, run to death . Not so much by original owners . It was the the people that wanted the car new , couldn't afford to buy it new or afford to properly maintain them . They wanted to ride for free .....never fix anything.
A lot of corvettes survived , but not in such good shape.
The local suspension expert , said probably 6 to 10 C3 show up a year with all the typical problems .....mostly needing everything
He said maybe 1 person a year actually goes ahead and fixs the suspension correctly . The rest panic when they hear the cost . So they take off down the road , car driving and handling line a piece of crap.
Destroy it further pass it on to the next victum

I think most of us (who have been doing this for a while) assume this when we buy a 30 year old car. People dont sell stuff they want to keep...they sell stuff thats about to fall apart....but the new guys in this hobby are still hopefull, and they are always wagering that they will be the one to find that diamond in the rough. I remember looking at a Corvette years ago, the owner told me it had some minor rust, and that the 'door hinge' had pulled off the frame and just needed to be welded on again...(he told me everything else was fine and just needed a tuneup. I was like 'awesome!'.
I didnt know at the time what 'birdcage rust' was, so I debated buying the car for a few days. Im SOOOO glad the guy creeped me out and I didnt buy it!
And as for the 'while Im at it' thread....
I pulled my oil pan to fix a leaky rear main seal. Wound up finding an internal crack in my block and had to replace the whole motor....
