I picked up a NOS POA valve for my '72 A/C system from an online auto parts vendor. It was a close out item. There was no paper work inside the box indicating that it was calibrated for R12. I called the vendor who had no idea and who didn't want to spend any time getting an answer to my question. Is it reasonably safe to assume that it is calibrated for R12 and correctly calibrated for R12?
Most likely, yes. Its probably a good idea to check its setting and re calibrate it while you're at it. Truthfully, the difference between the settings or r-12 and r-134a aren't too different but every little bit helps in performance. Not that tough to do anyway.

Mike is right.
But some systems were converted over to R-34.
You do not know the calibration setting so it could have been set up
for either gas. Out of box parts are always ?able.
I would call Vintage Air. They have if memory serves me well on their
web site a how to calibrate and test a POA.
If its set up for R-12 gas it should by pass at 35 psi on the low pressure guage.
I believe it lower for R-34 as its lighter.
I tested mine along time ago with a small pancake compressor and a
bunch of fittings purchased at Home Depot.
I forget so I'm not the most helpful but hopefully pointed you in the
right direction
