My 81 is really shiny. No computer, Holley carb and MSD ignition. 383 stroker build.

Does this count for a good looking engine bay? I spent a lot of time on my 81 cleaning everything up and hiding wires.

Personally, I think a 100% bone stock perfect condition 1980-82 engine compartment, smog and all, ductwork and stickers and all, is absolutely beautiful. I just love them OEM.

However, on a full-custom '81 I had back in the old days when I was showing customs, I took every stock item under the hood and chromed or polished it. Other than the distributor cover, intake and valve covers, they were all OEM parts, only chromed. They were glittering, including the fan, air cleaner, booster hinges, intake, everything. Way more than the typical bolt-on chrome you could buy. It was a neat look in the day and won several "Best Engine" awards.

"Is there such a thing as a great looking 1980 thru 1982 engine ?"
Made me think you are implying that the 80-82 engines do not look great?!?!
Okay they are granted no bb with a tri power.

Now isn't this a great example of personal tastes?
And I think VB summed it up really well, in the day he dug full chromed out now he digs yawn, ( I couldn't resist ) bone stock,

I owned two 81's and when it came out thought the "stock" 82 cross fire was too cool,
I couldn't mod up my 81's fast enough, but more for performance than hating the way stock looked.

As much as I love mods the 80-82's do have some odd appeal in bone stock trim, my issue with that is it hurts performance of an already low po engine that is in a Corvette that one expects to be all badass.

Just a correction... I've always liked the 80-82 in bone stock. I loved the way the lines contoured over the air ductwork and cleanly filled out the compartment. It had a certain neat symmatry to me. Thats why I never liked 80-82s with the stock air cleaners replaced with a speed shop chromie and the ductwork all removed... the air lines seemed to bend over nothing and there were big gaps along the edges of the fender lips... they look very incomplete and unfinished to me when modified that way.

Problem was in the days when I showed very custom painted cars, you could not be competitive in a modified class with a stock engine compartment, hence the chrome/stock concept.

At shows I was always very taken back by the fellows who would chrome out/custom detail everything and keep it bone stock.

This might look incomplete or unfinished to you but as far as engines go and this happens to be stock THIS is sweet...well, to me anyway...very little nonsense just down to business........in fact the only real mods I would do would be things like ditch the air pump and run better plug wires...
