Default Header Bar Installation Alignment Question

Getting ready to install a new header bar in a 71.

I have read some threads and the Willcox article...just want to be sure I am positioning it right.

For side to side positioning, I am going to rely on the brackets that hold it to the wheel wells.

For front to back, I am going to bring it forward to the lip in the bonding strip just behind the headlight openings, rather than push it to the rear of the bonding strip.

Hope I am explaining it clearly.

Does that sound correct?

Thanks

I marked mine before I took it off, so it would go right back where it was after I fixed the rivet bumps... so I can`t help you much with fore & aft alignment.
BUT, I would recommend a couple boards, a bunch of paint sticks, and clamps for the re-install. It helps push the bumps back down as well as keep the header nice & tight. Put some extra glue in the rivet holes too.
I also replaced the nose brace in mine at the same time, it was rusted in half.

I am not following. Are you replacing the upper brace and also the bonding strip? Do you have the original parts? Can you see where the original was? I am doing the same thing and just completed a mock up of things to make sure the head light assemblies and hood are not out of whack. The amount of adhesive applied will also effect the head light alignments by lowering the brace more then before. So what are you doing.
Thanks

Great picture, I was trying to figure out how many clamps and what types to use. Not sure what the front clamps by the bumper are for.
Thanks

Same as me here. Mark before you remove.

Cheers

Old header bar removed, rivets drilled out.
Bonding strip is still in place.
New header bar from Willcox ready to install.
I have the old header bar, which I think I will use as a guide in the placement of the new one.
Going to use stainless steel washers as spacers for the adhesive as was suggested.

And I have the wood and clamps ready....I used those already to help flatten down the bumps on the nose after rivets were removed.

Hopefully once I attach the 2 side supports to the header bar and wheel well the placement will become more obvious.

Now I got it, it all sounds good to me. Also even though I used new parts I noticed where the marks were for the old header as well as the end bolts were since those holes are slotted. You got my blessing. Hope it works. Seems like a lot of us are doing the same repair.

I took the header off, but left the bonding strip in place... then dug the rivets out of that.

There`s another metal brace in the nose. Mine was rusted in half, so I replaced it at the same time as the header bar.

We bought our car with a badly busted nose... (fiberglass damage.... frame, braces, & radiator was unhurt) so we bought a front clip from another car. That clip came with rivet bumps. But I cheated on the repair... I did it with the clip upside down on the garage floor, making this a VERY easy job!

Oldgto that picture looks very familiar. I think over the weekend I will be attaching mine like in your clamp picture.

Yea, I fixed the rivet bumps, but then got excited, and fitted the clip 3 times... then glued it back on the car BEFORE I glued the header back on!

I kind of know what you mean. I have been getting ahead of myself often. I get excited and then crap I forgot to do this or that. At least I'am not alone. I probably need less coffee the days something big is going on.
