Default DIY Side pipe heat shields.

I think it's ridiculous to pay $600 for pair of heat shields. I spent $60 in material and about 4-5hrs of labor.

44" long 5" Dia Aluminum pipe

Using 1/2" u channel I made a bracket to be used with hose clamps.

Rivet in the brackets

Polish and mount

Great idea. Love my sidepipes, dont like the look/cost of heat shields, but I'm always getting burned so this is something I have to think about.

I agree, the cost for shields is absurd. $200 seems about right, 500-600 is just plain greedy. Good job on yours!

Those covers in the link you provided look like they'd fit over most side pipes. They have them pictured with a glasspack-type muffler, not an insert.

Default Question

artsvetkov,

Looks like self tapping screws attached the Mounting Strip to the Shield. But how did you fasten the Mounting Strip to the Exhaust Pipe?

Here:

Here is a quick drive around
http://youtu.be/gxFzUUaDZ1o

I used rivets to rule out screws coming loose due to vibration. Then I used 4" hose clamp inside u channel and around side pipe to attach it.

artsvetkov,

Am I right in assuming you used that jig saw in the picture to cut that pipe in such a super straight line?

Yes I used a variable speed jig saw and kept it a slow speed for blade life and to reduce any possible kick back, I also like to practice my patients.
