On my '80 the boot has a metal (or possibly plastic, I can't recall) trim piece along the bottom edge which fits on the outside edge of the console hole. The four screws go through the console plastic and then in to the trim ring of the boot. (I assume we're talking about the outer leather boot...)

Hello. Not sure if there are any differences between 1976 and 1978 models, but here's how I installed the leather shifter boot on my '76.

The replacement boot I ordered was pre-drilled, but only two of the holes lined up with the shifter plate holes. No problem since it takes nothing to drill new ones on the boot.

Once you push the boot in place (it will only fit one way), you secure it with the four screws.

I chose to shorten the two front screws (once they were in place) with a Dremel tool, since I thought they were too long and they may interfere when reinstalling the shifter plate. Anyway, that's what I did. Here are two pics that may help you with yours.

I was not able to stretch the new boot all the way over the trim plate to put the screws in properly. Some of the reproductions seem to be made a little too small.

Go from the inside out using an awe from the inside hole to the one on the boot, you should be able to pull the boot down over the plastic. (on 77-82). You'll have to work it a bit but it should go.
