Default 75 A/C evaporator replacement

What is in store for me to remove the evaporator in my 75?

I pulled a vacuum tonight in high hopes only the compressor seal was leaking, but I could hear air escaping from the evaporator housing.

I also assume these use the expansion valve over the orfice design? I have enough R12 to charge and have a little extra on hand.

I'm am curious as to how well these C3 cool with 134 if I decide to go that route and not use my R12?

Search the forum. There are quite a few threads -to include photos- showing how this is done. It's not an easy job, but not as bad as you would think.

They cool just fine with 134a. I converted my '72 and used the recommended parallel flow condenser along with the Sanden compressor. I also converted another car but kept all the factory parts and it too cools just fine. So, while the condenser may offer some benefit at elevated performance, it may not be to the point where the system won't work well without it.

Thank you gerry72 for your reply, I think I will try just replacing the faulty evaporator and and install a new dryer, but leave my condenser alone, provided it checks out ok. I may put in a new seal in the compressor too, since we all know how G.M. had a tendency to leak over winter and a 40 year old vehicle is going to be no different.

I have installed 134A in other R12 systems and for the most part they do well. I have it in my 88 Vette, but with that huge back glass it takes all it can do to keep it cool on a hot summer day. I think if I were to install some tinting on the back glass that would greatly help on that car.

I am dreading the evaporator change on the 75, but maybe like you said it won't be as bad as I'm thinking.

I will take a gander at other post here on the forum and see what others have said.

Many thanks,

John
