Default 1971 wiper ?

I have the wiper transmission assy out of the car. I have everything loose and moving freely but I'm not sure if the shaft should move independently on both sides of the big spring?

Paul,

Are you talking about the wiper door linkage or the assemble between the wiper motor and wiper arms?

If it's the wiper door linkage then no the shaft should not move independently.

Brad, I'm referring to the wiper door linkage. There is a horizontal 2 inch spring where it looks to me like there should be some movement.

Thanks for the response.

Paul,
I was thinking you where saying the shaft moves independently each side of the spring.

This spring is just to assist in the raising and lowering of the wiper door. The spring is on a sleeve with one end attached to the middle firewall bracket, where the vacuum actuator bolts to. The other end of the spring is held on the shaft. The solid shaft runs through this sleeve. The shaft rotates in this sleeve but only about 1/4 of a turn.
To check the operation of the linkage you need to mount it as if it was in the car by the three firewall mounting points, the outer ends and the bracket where the actuator bolts to. When it's mounted then you can check its operation by moving the threaded rod the actuator would attach to.
It is difficult to check the operation of the linkage if it's just sitting on a work bench and not mounted.

That's what I was looking for. I don't have any movement there, time for some heat.

Thanks again!
