Interior door lock

This is on my 77, I removed the door panel to adjust the window properly and lube everything and when I removed the release handle the pot metal crumbled of the handle mechanism. I bought a replacement one that came off a donor car and installed it and everything operates as normal but my problem is that I can not for the life of me get the lock **** to install. The teeth on the handle mech all look fine and the teeth inside the **** look fine but I can't get them to mesh together, am I missing something here or is there a trick to getting the **** back on? It does lock and unlock as it should but the **** won't go on enough for the c clip to latch.

The lock ***** are designed to only go on one way. There should be an area on the **** with no teeth, this has to match to the flat spot on the shaft. Line them up, give it a whack and you should be good.
