Default speedometer not working

I have a 74 4 speed... and speedometer doesn't work...

How often does the cable break/go out? What else could go out that would keep it from reading the speed?

I was watching a video and it looks like there are 2 cables??? one from the speedometer that goes to about the firewall (short) and a long one (27 inches?)... can these come unclipped?

anyways I'm wanting to get the parts before the car goes to the shop and get this fixed... any other ideas on what could be wrong? (I know there are like a million things that *could* be wrong)... just looking for the 80/90 percent chance.

Thanks in advance - Jeffrey

Hey Jeff; going through this same thing on my '73 4speed. Good chance it's the cable especially if its been in there a long time. I disconnected mine at the speedo this evening, fairly simple, just need to get the car up and disconnect from the tranny tomorrow. My cable is pretty ragged so I'm hoping that is the fix (cheap) . Other things that could be wrong , the speedo it self could be bad. Not sure what could go wrong on the tranny side those gears are pretty sturdy, hopefully some other forum member will chime in with more advice.
Good luck

Your -74 should be like my '73 and have one long cable about 72 inches long it goes through a grommet in the fire wall.

I had same problem with my 74. If it is a 4 speed, there is only one cable. Before you pull the cable check the gear in the transmission, these are plastic and would probably be the first to go.

Any idea what's the name of this gear? I want to do a google search/learn about it.

I've ordered an Assembly Instruction Manual - but don't have it yet.

Uhm... so there are like a few of them with different number of teeth... 18/19/20/21/22/24

I'm guessing I need to get the one that matches my rear axle ratio.

I have a '78 that the speedometer wasn't working in. The cable tested OK in my case. I had to take it in to get rebuilt because I wasn't confident in my skill to manage the small parts. The main clue for me was that the trip odometer wouldn't reset. All is good now. Good luck with yours.

When I got my 74, same problem. Mine was the cable. The manufacturers say it's a two part cable. That was out of stock so I got the single cable and everything works perfect...for the last 2 years.

Very easy fix with the car lifted up on ramps. Had my 16 year old daughter push the cable thru the firewall while I aligned it into the tack.
