Last year I replaced all 4 calipers with new pads and bled the system. Had a rock hard pedal and the brakes were very touchy (did not like that) and every now and then they would be spongy then go away. Well today I removed the pads and both front pads on each side of the car you could see brake fluid on the back side of the pad where the piston makes contact. Not bad but wet and removed the paint from the pad backing. To me this means they are slightly leaking and need replaced again. Is this correct? The rear calipers were bone dry. I'm in the process of painting the calipers and this is how I found them.
Also I never did apply the anti-squeal lubricant so they did squealed little but only at the end of braking so I'm going to apply that stuff but where do you put it? On the back side of the brake pad?

replace them...NO, rebuild them...yes, depending on who you bought them from they might still be under warranty, either way they are most likely stainless sleeved and can be rebuilt, o-ring or lip seal it`s your call.

Yes pulled the receipt and going to get another front set. But I guess my question was if they were slightly leaking as mine would that cause the firm then spongy then back to firm pedal? I know with the engine not running the pedal would go to the floor but extremely slow. There was no dripping and wet streaks running down from the calipers so from underneath you would have never know the problem existed.
Well I removed the rears and they too have slight seepage coming from the seals so I may as well replace them too. Question though, is there a tell-tale sign that the pistons are bad? Squeezing them into the bore a few of them are rough and a couple slide in easy and a couple of them will not pop back out as the others do.
