So on my bb there is an extra belt from the crank to the water pump, no idle pulley...what is the "right" way to remove and install that creature?

Yes I am still determined to route the P/S belt around the water pump pulley because that's where it GOES.
When I read your response I thought Broke is drinking his on stash of Kool aid. The add on pulley you speak of is for a car with both A/C and P/S . I do not have an A/C car. I went back and read my post and then I looked at the picture I posted. I can see how someone might assume I have a A/C car , the Alt belt is pulled over to the other side so a good picture cold be taken of the P/S belt, also you can't see from the picture that the P/S belt goes down and around the crank pulley not just around the water pump pulley.
Page 253 of the '73 AIM shows four belt configurations, top right is my car, P/S only. The Alt belt rides on track one of the water pump pulley (closest to the block), and around the crank. P/S belt rides on track two of water pump pulley and around the crank. The A.I.R. pump rides on track three of W/P pulley. My car does not have a three track pulley. Someone when removing the smog pump must have removed the three track and replaced it with a two track pulley which should be fine, the ALT and P/S belts track perfectly around the crank pulley, just when P/S belt goes over to the P/S pulley is where things go awry. I have two new brackets ordered but now I don't think they are the problem , I think it is going to settle back on the pump itself. After I determine that the brackets are not the problem I will order another pump from a Corvette vendor ,it has to be the pump.

Dont ya love it when someone knows more about our car than we do...

My power steering belt was off too...it wasn't when the chassis swap tech got the car into the shop but he was kind enough to point it out,
The alt bracket was bent...gee I wonder how that happened.

Please post how all this works out...

The problem was not the pump or brackets it was the p/s pulley. My restoration book called for a stamped steel pulley for L82 engines with no AC and that was what I had. Paragon Reproductions catalog said that ALL engines with out AC should have a three spoke cast pulley, so I ordered one and it fit perfectly .
