Just went thru this as tire shop stripped THREE studs!

I drilled a hole in the shield, after whacking the stud in to show the spot

Man, never done it on a C3. Done it on other cars though. Been a while, but I remember removing the rotor and knocking out the old one out of the hub with a hammer and punch...put the new one in and used an impact with a couple of nuts on it. Once it's in, impact the nuts off.

I read several other posts about replacing the studs, and they discussed cutting the dust shield at a certain location to be able to push the studs out the back side. The rotor has to be turned to that location ( for example 7 o clock position) which gave them enough room to position a vise type of tool which pushed the stud out. The stud would then go through the opening in the dust shield.

I know you said you didnt want to do this method, but that is all that I found so far.

The proper way is to remove the half shaft from the flange, remove the flange from the spindle and using a spindle knocker, knock the spindle out. Its a PITA, youre gonna need new seals and should probably go ahead and replace the bearings while youre in there. Good Luck!

P.S., Ive never tried before but I wonder if removing the parking brake shoes(quite a job in itself) would give you enough room to get the studs in/out.

Remove the parking brake shoes them drive the studs inward until they come out. Then use a backward lug nut to pull them in.

Default After all of the talk on this topic

Maybe it will work for you to just sit it on the ground next to your car and click your heals together with your eyes closed! but most competent mechanics could eyeball it and see it is a no go with a little basic study!!!! I said most!

I don't consider drilling one hole to be such an outrage, so have fun with your bearings-- mine are slip fit is a thought I want you to keep in your brain, as you wail away with your mallet or apply all of that pressure with your press!
