yes, try replacing a C4 battery. you have to remove body panels. I know.

Yikes!!

FYI I placed a new timer in my car and drain is back to 2.4 Amps so I'm stumped, unless the new timer has issues too.

Turned out, my center console lid behind the seat was ajar, and apparently this caused the little light to stay on all the time, always causing my battery to be dead.

It might be something goofy like that.
I also had this exact problem with my 72 a few months ago.

From the thread title I just had to add this bit of electrical theory.

ELECTRICAL THEORY BY JOSEPH LUCAS

Electricity is characterized as the transmission of negative ions by retention of a visible spectral manifestation known as "smoke". We know this to be true because every time one lets the smoke out of an electrical circuit, it stops working.
The function of a wiring harness is to conduct the smoke from one device to another. When the wiring springs a leak and lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works afterward.
For example, if one places a copper bar across the terminals of a battery, prodigious quantities of smoke are liberated and the battery shortly ceases to function. In addition, if one observes smoke escaping from an electrical component such as a Lucas voltage regulator, it will also be observed that the component no longer functions. The logic is elementary and inescapable!
In conclusion, the basic concept of transmission of electrical energy in the form of smoke provides a logical explanation of the mysteries of electrical components especially British units manufactured by Joseph Lucas, Ltd.

My wires seem to contain little sparkly flashes of light along with the smoke, sometimes anyway
