Happy 4th all. I added some grease to my steering box today (grease gun needle works well for this purpose). On my lower gear box bolt there is this metal prong (ground connection?) There has never been a wire connected to it... What is supposed to connect here (1980 4-spd)?
That is an identification tag and not a place to attach a wire. If you scratch the paint off you'll find a number on it that might denote the date of manufacture or where it was manufactured.
Sure enough, a bit of brake cleaner and scrubbing reveals 126 0... Don't know what it means, but at least I still don't think I'm missing an electrical connection!
This build date tag was attached to all OEM steering gear assemblies starting from around 1975 through 1982. This is the 1971 through 1974 gear assembly. The drawing was revised in July 1975 to add the tag (and reflects that previous gear assemblies for service would have had the build date tag.)
Sorry about the quality of the scan. The description on the drawing says the following:
"MANUFACTURING DATE CODE TO BE STAMPED
ON TAG IN THIS AREA - CODE 000 0
000 DAY OF THE YEAR (1 THROUGH 366 -
TO BE A THREE DIGIT NO. 001 ETC)
