Side Yoke Bearing Seal Buggered Up
While disassembling the rear end on my '77 to install some new side yokes, bearings, and seals, I found that one of the seals had been glued in with some RTV sealant.
I thought it was just caked on grease.
While cleaning the seat for the seal, I found out why the seal was glued in.
Buggered up seat for the seal.
It looks like there was a failure of the inner u-joint or side yoke on that side.
What do you all think is my best option:
1. Redo the Bubba fix. (It wasn't leaking.)
2. Have a machine shop try to repair the damage.
3. Replace the housing.
4. Some other option that I haven't thought of.

When the splined ends of the side yokes begin to fail the dust shields begin chewing up the sides of the iron housing so what you see is the usual fix to make sure the seal doesn't fall out. My '71 is the same way as yours but yet I have put at least 60,000 miles on it since I replaced the side yokes and seals. It may look Bubba'd but that's okay.

The metal at the 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock position was actually bent inward. The old seal was forced into the seat and not round. I used my dremel with a new cylindrical stone to make the sealing surface round again. I still think I'll put a bead of Permatex around the OD. It can't hurt.
