Default Intermittent Tach issue

1975 350 (not original) MSD Distributor, external coil.

Tachometer works for first few minutes on startup, but as engine warms up it quits.

Sounds like a loose wire or ground possibly. I saw some threads on the tach filter, sounds like that it would not work at all.

Also, found out about a small adapter for the MSD ignition but I did not install it and do not have the adapter if needed.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

If the tach filter gets loose the tach will work then not work. So make sure the filter is bolted down tight.

I finally got around to the tach issue again. I was fiberglassing the battery compartment (fixing the hole and adding a battery tie-down) and also replacing the Power Steering Assist.

Anyway, I found the tach filter. It has an MSD box along with the MSD distributor. The MSD box had about 16" of redundant wiring attached to the tach filter. When I picked up the tach filter and one of the wires just fell off! So definitely a loose connection. Another thread said you can bypass it so that's what I am trying first and see if I even need to replace it. I will update the thread as I found more info.

I'm running MSD box and MSD distributor with factory tachometer and no filter. And it's working fine for me.

Great! I wanted to fire her up last night but didn't want to wake everyone in the house up. Maybe when I get home from work tonight. (There is a fair in town this week!)

Well I started her up the other day after removing the tach filter and it works fine. The tach filter was not bolted down and was just laying there in a bunch of wires.

Works like a charm now - Thanks!
