That's the VIN for a 1970 Convertible that I came upon as my new prospective new project, from what I re-call there's several engine size for this year with multile veriation of HP. Of course the physical difference the Big is obvious to recognize.
Where else can I look beside the block to find out which engine this can has?

No where. I'm not sure what you're asking. For 1970, C3s could have a small block (three to choose) or a big block (only one). What do you see? What are the stamps on the engine pad? Original engines have an engine identification stamp (larger characters) and a VIN derivitive (smaller characters) stamped on the pad.
There is no option information in the VIN.

All the VIN tells you is that it's a Chevrolet (1), Corvette (94), convertible (67), 1970 (0), St. Louis assembly plant (S), the 8515th 70 built (408515). An engine code wasn't included in the VIN until 1972.
Does it still have the tank sticker? That would be another way, but I don't think the present owner is going to take to kindly of you dropping the gas tank.

The tank sticker would confirm only what engine the car left St. Louis with and not what might be in it now. The OP is trying to determine what's in it now.

There will be two sets of #s on block just in front of right head if they havent been decked off that will tell you everything about engine if it has not been internally changed
Engine, tranny, and frame stamps are VIN derivatives only; not complete VINs. The complete VIN is on the windshield post. With the exception of the engine pad, none of the VIN derivatives identify the original engine installed in the car.
so the only complete vin is on the windshield frame. so when you replace the frame, you don't hafta re-title car to a different vin. so what do you do if you replace the windshield frame?

I have not seen any one do that but the vin tag should stay with the car .Please send picture of windshield post .Where in Calif are you ?
i am not in process of any major job like that at this time. i was just wondering which part is considered-in the eyes of the law and the various motor vehicle agencies-the "car'. is it the frame, or the bird cage?

DMV will always look for Vin plate in left front of windshield and drivers door they can't see frame vin without laying on ground and a mirror .Was the car a theft recovery ?so new vin tag issued ?
no vin issue. thread started with OP wondering what was orig engine. then it got discussed which parts had vin stamped on them. then i got to wondering which part with vin is LEGALLY considered to be the motor vehicle. and i am sure it has and will come up again. virtually every other car out there is unibody. body and frame are the same part. but if you drop a 72 body on a 75 frame and cop pulls you over cuz he knows the rear bumpers don't belong on the 75 vette he just ran plates on. where do you stand legally?
...thread started with OP wondering what was orig engine..
The OP might have meant original engine, but did not say that. He asked only what might be in the car now. (Where else can I look beside the block to find out which engine this can has?)
