Spare Tire Carrier Bolt Lengths
G'day All,
Since I am using 255/R6015 tires on my '69 vert, I will have to replace
the 2 front spare tire carrier bolts to be able to place the spare in the
carrier. Can someone let me know the length of these bolts in a 78-81
so I can replace mine and enable me to carry my spare?
Thanks for your help.

68-79 all use the same front hanger bolts. On 80-82's, the bolts were replaced with two hook shaped supports.
There were three different lock bolts, one for 68-74, the second for 75-77 and the final one that was used from 78-82. The Corvette parts book gives the length of 68-74 lock bolt as 7/16"-14x7, but doesn't have a length listed for either of the other two bolts. There isn't much difference in the length of the two bolts though, I'd say about 8 3/8" for the 75-77 lock bolt and 8 5/8" for the 78-82.
All 68-82's used the same spare tire tub.
The hooked 80-82 front supports are designed to allow the tub to hang a little lower, when a 255/60 tire is in the tub. The best setup would probably be the 80-82 front hangers, and either the 75-77 or 78-82 lock bolts.
It's possible that a flat 255/60R15, may still fit in your 69 tub, using the existing bolts. The tub will accommodate the 8" wheel, and when deflated the 255/60 probably isn't any wider than the rim? This would get you someplace to have the tire patched.

Thanks gbvette62 for your detailed info, the only comment I would make is that the tub
has to also accommodate a fully inflated tire and wheel as well. I will see if there is any
adjustment in the front hanger bolts, because at the moment I cannot get the tub to
come anywhere close to closing and that is why I felt that there had to be a different bolt
length used for the 78 onwards cars, as the 78's where the first listed in the black book
as having 255/60 tires.

Since it is a spare why not use a skinner tire but same height like a 225 70 15 The 255 is 27.05 diameter and the 225 is 27.4 but the section width is about 1-1/8 thinner. Just an idea. I am not sure but I think that the 81 and 82 used a space saver spare.
