I have a 74 stingray with a AC alternator and there is a soda can sized item wired to it with 2 wires to the alternator 1 going to the bat. connection and the other going to alt. body i have no idea what it is any help appreciated.
If its the size of a soda can, Id guess it may be a capacitor. Many stereo-philes install them to help manage battery and amp drain from high end sound systems. Does this sound like anything your car may be running?

good question. I plan on relocating it with a nice mounting bracket, should i be concerned after i disconnect it about getting zapped.
STILL only 12-14 volts, and like a auto battery, you need a sweaty grip/arm on a wrench and lean hard on ground/chassis to get 'bit' and at that it's only a tingle.....
HOW SOME EVER, do NOT try that with household voltages......

Um...the caps in old flash cubes have killed people.... I do know they will give a really painful bite, people would make zap guns out of old cameras,
I work on old vintage antique arcade stuff that has ones that are low volts but will bite the snot out of you, but ground both terminals with a screwdriver etc and it will zap off the volts it stores...I use a 12v bulb to drain them, .

Yeah- but they (xenon flash circuit in the camera) use an oscillator and 2 stages of transformers to raise the voltage to 1000v...
However this noise suppression cap might give you a small bite if you put it on your tongue.
Bob-
I also doubt if it would even be worth re-using -as it is probably deteriorated - and really is not doing a thing.
