Default Question about part replacement/repair

I just bought a (project) 1979 L48. Looks like the previous owner tried to force the passenger side headlight closed and broke the support bracket at the front mounting points. The bracket is aluminum. Here is my question: have it welded (possible with cast aluminum?) or replace with a new one (around $200)? I'm fortunate to live near a marine certified welder but no idea what they would charge.

I had the same issue on my 73 and my neighbor has a shop that does boat prop repair and welds aluminum. He made a weld repair on mine and it's still holding 5 years later

Thanks! I was about 50% sure it could be welded. I'll get an estimate and see if it will be less expensive than a replacement.

Kinda. They're actually pot metal, but can be welded by someone who knows what they're doing.

Didn't know that, thanks! Thought it was aluminum because it feels very light.

Mike, I thought that they are aluminum, also. I had one welded at work years ago, and the welder stated that they were "dirty" aluminum. He meant that it had a lot of impurities in the metal. I think that pot metal would just melt from the heat. Lou.
