Default 1973 Tach Cable

I need to install a new tach cable. I have tried reaching under the dash from the brake pedal area with no luck. Does the dash have to be removed to get to the back of the tach? If so, any details or tricks on dash and dash pad removal would be appreciated.

Thanks

You do not necessarily have to remove the dash, but you will have to get it loose enough to get your hand on the rear of the tach.

Lower the steering column; remove the trims screws left, center top, and right. You may have to wiggle an AC duct free. Pull the dash down a little and toward you. Expect it to be tight since the main dash harness holds it reasonably well, but there is enough slack for it drop a bit.

Thanks. Is there a "clip" that has to be release or does it screw on to the back of the tach?

There is a clip on the back of the tach. Usually (read -it's supposed to be installed) pointing down. Push that clip toward the tach and the cable should come free. IT's easier with two people- one pushing on the clip and the other pulling the cable from under the hood. Then you get to fish the new one back thru the firewall and guide it onto the tach. It's fun.

Once you get it out and lubed you can put it back in from the distributor end of the housing. Then from now on you can pull it out from the distributor end. I reversed mine 5 years ago when I discovered it can be turned around end-for-end.

Yes do this. Will make your life easier whenever you go to lubricate it, or if the cable breaks. You can buy repair kits to just replace the inner cable, not the whole thing.

Now.....tell him about rotating the distributor/re-indexing the spark plug leads on the dist. cap so the tach cable isn't in a bind.

Are you sure about that?
