I desperately need new seats in my 1970. The covers are ripped, and the foam is disintegrating...every time I sit down, *POOF* out goes more foam dust!
So - how many of you have replaced your seat foam and covers? How hard is it? I've seen a couple videos online and it doesn't look too terrible? But I thought I've read that it is a pain in the ars??? Just not sure if I want to get into this myself. What other choice do I have?
So, assuming I do take this project on, any suggestions on where to buy the foam/covers? Do any of the retailers have a nice sale on this sort of stuff at a particular time of year, or any other tips to save some $$?
I know Corvette America does it, but as with most significant purchases, I'd advise you to research all the major players with interior pieces and see if they offer them installed on new foam and what the prices are.
I replaced the seat foam and covers in my 72 and 73. The first seat was pretty difficult. By the 4th seat it was really pretty easy.
Its not that hard to do. Just takes time and patience. Buy a good set of hog ring pliers. The cheap ones seemed to tweak sideways when trying to pull the hog rings together.
The hard part is pulling the covers over the foam. It looks like the leather/vinyl will split and tear, but with constant pushing and pulling it will soon slide into place.
Wilcox has a good online video to watch over and over and over before you do this. But at some point you should get that aha moment and say that it doesnt look too difficult.
I stripped my seats down, had the hinges rechromed, sandblasted and epoxy coated the frame, installed new foam and Al Knoch covers. They turned out great. I would recommend this as a good project.
I bought my seat foams and leather style original seat covers from
Willcox. They both are made my Corvette America. I watched the
video for recovering my 73, took my time and it came out looking
good. CA has videos for the different years models, just pick your
year and follow their instructions. I watched the videos several times
before I began, and had no problems. I also restored my frames while
I had them apart.
Replaced the foam and covers on the 69 not that long ago. Definitely purchase the new foam, covers, baby powder (for helping the covers slide over the foam easier), and the better set of hog tie pliers. Not a difficult process at all, especially with a computer near by to reference videos online. You can do it.

Al Knoch even has exchange or outright seats ready to go and drop in the Vette....Whatever suits your interest....They make the stuff and only sells interiors....Excellent products.......
