Default OD automatic without cutting tunnel?

Thinking REAL hard on adding OD to my 1972 Auto project. What I will NOT do is cut the tunnel to make it happen. Is that even possible? If so which one would be "smaller" physically? Anyone have hands on experience with this?

Thanks in advance for any input. Right now the body is off the frame so doing it now would make more sense.

i put a 700r4 into my '72 earlier this year, with no tunnel cutting needed.
only had to shorten my driveshaft approx 3".

search for my "fiddly bits" thread, lots of info in there.

others say that a 200-4r is easier, no shaft shortening required.

i went with the 700r4 due to my 3.08 rear, better gearing, and the fact 200-4r not used down here in oz.

No tunnel mods are required to swap in an OD automatic.

Sounds good guys...thanks. What about any other issues? Will the original tack and speedo work as before? My end game is for the car to appear FULLY original but have some improvements for modern day use. I want to be able to take the on long trips without running too high RPM's or using too much gas.

Yes the tach and speedo will work. Just make sure the OD trans has the right gear in it for the rear gears your car has. As said above the driveshaft will be shortened, the shifter will have to be modded or a new one is installed. Can be made to look very stock.
