Actuator Seal Help
Trying to put new seals on some old headlight actuators..(the witches hats)
Sometimes it works, more often it doesn't.
They all seem to leak at the top of the hat, even though I place the end of the seal in the groove on the actuator shaft.
I use a bit of silicone spray to help them slide on, they don't tear, yet when I test with mity vac they don't hold vacuum.
Is there any trick to getting a good seal there?
Thanks

You can wrap a small, stiff piece of mechanics wire 2 or 3 turns around the end to help hold it in place (careful not to leave the ends where they could dig into the hat or dust boot) or clean it and put a little bead of RTV at the groove and let it help lock the hat in place.
There's a few suggestions at the bottom of this thread you could try if they are leaking (mine went pretty tight so no issues really)

Been using the retaining rings, and I tried electrical tape at the top end of the seal.
No luck so far with 2 different actuators and 2 different seals.
Frustrating when a job that should be simple becomes a pain.

I use the RTV stuff that is designed to bond steel to rubber at the junction of the shaft/seal. Always worked well for me.

Didn't someone try a small tie wrap?
Not sure of that either, the end of the tie wrap kinda scrapes back and forth when the rubber folds over it. It did not work well for me.
Root cause is the rubber parts are of poor quality. They even look cheap!

I tried it tonight....will let it set until tomorrow night before I see if it worked.
Thanks for all the suggestions
