Default '81 Coolant Temp Sender / ECM Question

The coolant temp gage stopped working on my project '81. Before installing a new coolant temp sender I drove the car about five miles to gas it up but on the way home it died and would not restart. After letting it sit for awhile it restarted but soon died again. After totally cooling down it started and I was able to drive home.

I installed the new coolant temp sender and now get a reading on the temp gage once again. I let the car run for 70 minutes in my driveway without any engine faulting.

So, does the ECM cause the engine to die if the coolant temp sender fails to send a signal?

I'm pretty handy with my older cars but this '81 is a whole new experience!

no, the gauge sender and the sensor for the ECM are two different parts. which one did you replace? the one on the left head, or the one on the right front of the intake manifold?

Replaced the one located in the LH cylinder head. Then I presume this had no bearing on my engine quitting recently.
