Looking to update the 74 warranty block non-matching numbers out of my 73 L82 with the original 250hp heads. It's Automatic weekend non-show car, much fun.
Looking at pace and gm crate motors through jeggs/summit-really would like to put a 350 vortec head motor in there but confusion on the fuel pump issues, Long block vs-short block and engine mounts?
Maybe I should just get the 350 290hp and maybe have a better cam in it, which came? I have the quad rebuilt with a performance intake. Maybe the truck 350 300hp but it's a long block as well-torque.
Confused-as I'm not a big motor guy-but can turn wrenches in the correct direction and stop before it goes tink/snap.
Is the engine in your car bad? If not, the diff between your paid-for short block and a new one is very little. Yes, you can get 4 bolt forged crank forged pistons...but are you taking it to the strip and turning 7000 rpm's?

L-82 has 4 bolt main, forged crank and pistons already

Assuming the warranty engine is also L82. All the more reason for what i was saying. Crate engine, what, 3500 or more? Pair of AFR or brodix heads, crane roller cam for a little over 2500? Why settle for 350,hp?

On the other hand, once you have that kind of power, you are probably gonna use it. This rear doesn't like to be hammered on with that much power. Some upgrades maybe should be considered. Now, if engine is done or tired, this is a completly different conversation.

Keep in mind that crate engines are rated at gross HP (unless they are a direct replacement engine). Your L82 is rated at net HP. So you would probably be loosing power with that 290hp engine.
My warranty Engine tag CEOB 02411 Waranty block F pass side stamped below heads and a E on pass side. Engine casting 3970010 =1973 +1974 L82.
Heads" clock on 12/12:30,GM48, 21, 330545, F16, 3. = 1973 L82 350/250hp.
Still spins her tires and into second with stall converter, little smoke on start up, steering or water pump belt noise, small lifter noise. I should wait till it's time for the motor, she still works and then I might go for the 350 ho 330hp vortec basic that has rollers and upgrade the cam before install.
Thank you

I installed a GM 350HO in my '70 last winter and it's a great engine...however it doesn't come with roller lifters. It comes with flat tappets from the the factory but the block is machined for roller lifters so it's an easy upgrade.
I really like the 350HO. It's a snappy engine with lots of torque.
Stop stop stop stop stop. Before laying out all that cash, keep in mind a complete great running LS1 Camaro, with a T56 can be had for $4-$5k. Transplant that drivetrain into your C3, and you'll have a totally modern classic with an all aluminum, roller lifter, port fuel injected engine. Pop some Corvette coil covers on the engine and part out what's left on the Camaro.
