Default Question replacing headlight actuators, 1979

Is it possible to remove the headlight actuators on a 1979 with the hood on? I tried over the weekend with no luck. I have not yet tried with the hood lowered (just thought of that)... Maybe that would provide enough room to get it out of the bracket after removing the 4 nuts. I know it will fit out through the grill, once I get it that far.

Thanks for any advice.

John

I'm not that familiar with the later c3's, but on my '70 cars I was able to easily remove the cans by having an assistant hold the hood ALL the way open. This gave me much more room to extract them. Worth a try.....

they will come out the top but like Dave said , someone has to hold the hood all the way open. I also put some tape on the hood so it wouldnt scratch it, it is a tight fit but will come out the top.

Also, if you disconnect the hood support bracket the hood will open a bit further....enough to wiggle the actuators out

I removed my actuators out of the front/bottom and it was easy. Now I know what I'm doing it takes me about 30 minutes a side to remove and replace an actuator. After disconnecting the vacuum lines I CLOSED the hood so I wouldn't scratch it. Here is the paint by numbers guide I used.

Good luck.

Great ideas, guys. I'll try them when I get back home this weekend. I don't know why I didn't try closing the hood while working on it last time, oh well. The idea of removing the support brace to open it further is good, too.

Thanks again for the help.

I have removed both my actuators from the top with the hood open and merely sitting on the lock that holds it open. I did tape heavily around where they came out and would have left plenty of scratches if I didn't. Mine is a 79 as well, BTW.
