Has anyone had any experience with SEM 15013 landau black vinyl spray? I have used SEM exterior trim paint with excellent results. I want to refresh the interior black plastic in back of the car. In the SEM video their directions include 39362 SEM soap, 38353 plastic prep, 38363 sand-free adhesion promoter prior to applying the 15013. Are all of the prep steps necessary?
I've used SEM in the past with excellent resutts. I did not use their prep products, but can say everything to be dyed must be squeaky clean.
I just ordered the spray. I will clean it well with the cleaners I already have and try using the SEM without the multiple primer steps. If I'm not satisfied, I can always re-do it.
Re dyed my old ElCamino from Black to light Tan(Fawn). Used all the SEM prep products turned out beautifully
I know this is a difficult question to answer, but do you think it would not have come out that nicely had you not used all of the prep products. They want you to use their soap, then their plastic prep (both products seem to have the same function), then the adhesion promoter before you get to the vinyl spray. I would like to skip a couple of steps, but I don't want to take short-cuts that may backfire.
During the body-off resto of my car, I re-dyed the entire interior the original red. I didn't use SEM dye, but I did use their plastic prep, vinyl prep, and sand free adhesion promoter.
Of those 3 products, I would definitely use the vinyl prep again, as it actually softens the vinyl surface slightly allowing the dye to really get a good "bite". The adhesion results on the vinyl were outstanding; much better than without the vinyl prep.
As for the plastic prep, and the sand free, I wouldn't use them again because in some back-to-back tests of the dye adhesion on hard plastic parts, they made no discernible difference.
As with any coating, the end result will only be as good as the prep. I washed the pieces over and over again in the bathtub with warm water and Dawn soap until water no longer beaded on the surface. Then I wiped them all down with isopropyl alcohol ( 90% or greater ) before spraying first the vinyl prep and then the dye.
