Default Transmission advice

Rookie C3 owner here. I have a 77 and it appears I have a trans leak. I noticed it wasn't shifting well and crawled under the best I can and noticed burned oil on the exhaust and small puddle under the car. It is a manual trans, think muncie m21. First, what oil do you recommend putting in it. Secondly where/how do put oil in it. Does anyone have a pic of the fill and drain points. I did order a CAM so I will have that eventually soon. Yes I do realize I need to figure out the leak, I just want to add oil before moving it much to inspect. Thanks again for any advice.

Should a Borg Warner trans. I think last year for a Muncie was 74. Any 85/90 gear oil is all you need.

I don't think there is a drain plug. The fill plug is about halfway up on the main case on the passenger side. It should have a square head.

That's how a pre 70 Muncie works. Not sure on B/W. If no drain plug your going to have to pump or siphon it out

Sta Lube 85W-90 seems the be the most recommended oil.

Back in the day I was taught to pull the plug and stick I finger in the hole to see where the level is, it should be level with the plug hole. Problem is you have to have it level, not jacked at an angle.

Tim....If it's a muncie the drain and fill plugs will be on the passenger side.

Here is the best pic I could find on mine.

You will likely find it is very hard to find a non-synthetic yellow metal and syncro safe gear oil. With that said I recently replaced the gear oil in my 77 with Redline MT90 and am very happy with it. It is so much easier to shift now especially when cold. You will have to drain all of the old oil if you are switching to synthetic though.

Thanks for the pic, that is what mine looks like. I am going to try to get it lifted and level this weekend to drain and fill it. Also try to find the leak location. I think there might be a couple leaks since I found two small puddles, one is a little further back. Thanks again.
