Default My son and I working on his '76 Stingray

My son's birthday was on Friday and he told me that he wanted to work on his Corvette. The car sat for 21 years and it has junk in it along with mice feces so proud I played it smart and safe with the masks. We are putting the '76 we were given in February back together. I bought an LO5 350 out of a '93 Silverado for $200 and we picked it up last weekend. So now we are getting the 'vette ready to drop the engine in over the winter. The TBI setup is being replaced with an older Edelbrock intake and a Holley 600cfm carb and we have long tube headers and a complete factory dual exhaust. I need to buy the carb rebuild Kit, external fuel pump and regulator, header and collector gaskets, get it all together and then hit the key. Picked up a new non-computer HEI this week for $30. So, the budget build continues!

Later,

Lee

My son and my bud Marty who we bought the motor from.

'93 LO5 350

New HEI

Ready to work

Being safe

Getting the battery out

Ugh! Nastiness

Found the door handle but we need the two metal clips to put it on.

Test drive!

Let's go for a spin!

Love pat on the nose

He loves the Stingray name

As a follow up both of the t-top bags were ruined so they had to be pitched. Also, one side of the hood is locked down now and pulling on the release is not freeing it up. Any ideas on getting it to open?

Later,

Lee

Great work Dad....The importance of spending quality time with your kids can't be emphasised enough. Keeping them interested in something besides video games will pay off bigtime in the long run. Good luck with the build.

Cool thing to do! His car! I haven't got that generous yet, in part cuz I have two boys that have worked on it and don't want to start a war (have to get another Vette someday?). Enjoy that time together!

I recall there is a 1-inch diameter hole in/on the upper passenger side fire wall that aligns with the hood latch on that side... i have always suspected that the hole was there to use a coat hanger or some other flexible hook tool to reach in and hook and tug the hood release on that side...

Wish i could be of more help...

Look-out... you are setting your son to be a mechanical engineer... not a bad outcome.

Carl

The hole is barely marginally visible to the right of the MSD box...

Thank you Carl! I will try to see if that works.

Andy, I have an '88 base coupe that I am putting back together. No, yeah, this one us all his. Two boys for you? Yeah you better get a 2nd and nip the jealousy in the butt haha!

Later,

Lee

My '88 base coupe. DNE 4+3 and Sport seats. Lightly optioned and a late year build (June 1988).

Good job!!! Buy him corvette coloring books too. He'll always remember this. Hopefully when he is in high school you guys can find another project to keep him away from drugs.

Thank you everyone! Doorgunner I am sorry to hear that your son is no longer here...but he is not suffering in Heaven and that is a good thing. Good to know that you two will be reunited!

We work on Legos adn build plastic models together as well as play cars and the occasional Lego video game (we team up). And I am hoping that he becomes a voracious reader (like his mom and dad are). We vary his interests and he actually does a good job of staying interested in different things too. Although he recently told us that he no longer wants to play with his Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. They grow up MUCH faster than I ever thought.

It's been fun talking with him and getting his thoughts about how he sees his car coming together. For instance, he had grave concerns about snow getting on his Corvette this winter. So, while we were out there I explained and showed him that unless we have a massive snowstorm that it will be alright. Plus, we will move it to my uncle's enclosed garage once we have the LO5 cleaned up and ready to install. So it won't be in the elements. That open-front barn is shielded from the road and the wind.

He's a good kid and my joy.

Thanks all...and also thanks for not bashing the '76. It's going to need plenty of work but we'll tackle it one thing at a time. We will get her running first and then get the nose repaired and then got after the interior (although it's pretty bad from the animal stuff so I'll rip the carpet and seats out this spring. I have a set of well used '77 seats I can put in temporarily). I appreciate the good cheer.

Later,

Lee

Which side is not popping? Driver or passenger?

Passenger side. The drivers side is unlocked. The hood was unlocked but my niece accidentally pushed down on it and locked it. The cable is hooked up but I'm unsure how well it works (if at all).

My plan was to take the hood off as we were going to work on getting the carcass of the 305 ready to remove. I'm going to hang the hood up in his room as I have a '77 hood I will use. I plan on cutting out the area where the vent goes and putting the hood vent back in.

Thanks,

Lee

One more thing, your son looks like an 8 year old kid.
ENJOY the next 5-7 years with him, soon he will have "other" interests.

Ask me how I know :- )

He turned 6 years old last Friday. Thanks...I know it will be tough when he no longer wants to hang out with dad. But until then I'll do what I can to strengthen our car bond. He really enjoys working/tinkering and I hope that continues even when he gets into his teens.

Thanks,

Lee

Lee,

It's an awesome time with them at that age. You are creating a lifetime of memories for both of you! Good luck with the build.

Lee, great you have him going at 6! I didn't mention my17 soon to be 18 year old daughter. Got by with getting her a '77 Monte Carlo. IT had a 502 but that got left with a po and she will have a 350 that will be all the power she needs!

The oldest has the Z28 to keep the green eye lady at bay.

And no worries about people bad-mouthing your car. Many of these guys have started with far less than what you have. Enjoy the ride, and take lots of road trips together in "your" Vette - and be sure and buy lots of ice cream!

Your starting point looks great compared to the piles of rusted, busted junk some of us had to start with!
