Default Muncie M-22 Trans

Does anyone have a M-22(Wide Ratio) trans in your Corvette? I saw some videos on U-Tube and am wondering if it is this loud in a Corvette? Does the sound bother you? I have side pipes so I think the gear whine will be drowned out by the exhaust sound.

Thanks 68Vetteman

I have an Autogear one. 1st is makes some noise but not bad.

The rest I don't hear unless I coast in gear coming to a stop. Still not race car loud but you hear it.

Personally not a big deal at all.

Even with sidepipes and a loud motor you'll hear it in 1st gear, barely noticeable in 2nd (unless you're pulling hard). Beyond that difficult to hear anything. Always quiet at cruise.

I think lots of Muncies are loud with a certain amount of gear whine...at least mine and my buds cars.

As an aside, aren't stock M22's close ratio....??

With aftermarket gears you can build a M22W.

You can also get an extra wide ratio(very similar to a too 5 speed) with a 2.94 first gear. Its the M22z. It would be good for guys with a 3.08 rear end. Mine is a 3.36.
Im trying to decide between that and a 5 speed......leaning to the TKO 5 speed but its twice as much.....that 5th gear would really be useful especially since I plan to do some holidays in it.

Thanks Scott. I never heard of a M-22z. I'm thinking of going from a 3.7 rear to a 3.08 to get the RPM's down at highway speeds.

I have one in my '70 motion mods Vette and it sounds like you have a bad rear end I also have one in my 68 L88 and because of the noise you could not get a radio but radios were weak in those days unlike many people think , they are not "straight cut" gears they are just cut at less of an angle for strength

The trans whine is part of the charm.

Thanks for your replies! When doing the math a 3.7rear with a 2.20 (close ratio trans) has a 1st gear ratio of 8.14. A 3.08 rear with a 2.56 (wide ratio trans) the 1st gear ratio is 7.88. Not a lot of difference. I love the sound of the side pipes so a gear wine in the lower gears is a ++.

I've got 3.36 gears and an M20 wide ratio trans and first gear is really long. I wouldn't use an M20 with a 3.08 rear gear. First gear would be gutless unless you have 500 horse. You need a lower first gear than 2.56. 2.94 first gear would be a minimum for me.

After all this talk I had to take an afternoon spin up to my brothers and back, side pipes, engine roar and a hint of whine on the downshift....mmmmm, perfect. Thanks

I think the sound of an M22 is awesome - in the right car. The sound makes me feel more connected to the car when I'm driving/shifting.

Would I want an M22 in something I drive on trips etc? Nope. The sound would get old on a long(er) drive. Sort of like an exhaust drone at speed does.
