It`s funny to me how many non-Corvette people we talk to actually think the StingRay emblem made it a special car. A lot of people think it was a special performance option, or made the car in some way faster or better.

I found it interesting when my next door neighbor, (for the first time he saw my '71) said "Nice Sting Ray, the Sting Rays are my favorite year Corvettes".

Personally I don't refer to any Corvette as a Sting Ray..just Corvette.

Some makes and models, I do refer to as their full name/description, as their truly is a difference (albeit it may only be in cosmetic options, but may also be performance inhancements) from a non descript/standard model, such as:

Mustang vs Mach I
Mustang vs Boss
Camaro vs Z28
Camaro vs Camaro SS
Chevelle vs Chevelle SS
Camaro vs Camaro RS
Camaro vs Camaro RS/SS
Cougar vs Cougar XR7
Dodge Charger vs Charger RT
Dodge Charger vs Charger Daytona

There are more, but bottom line Sting Ray attachment has no special significance, aside from being just another/additional name/description.

I find it interesting that they dropped the name with the new body in 68.
It's as if they were only considering the 63-67 Sting Rays, but then the C3 is based on the Mako Shark so why back to Stingray in 69?

I don't usually post a lot, especially in the same thread, but this has always been an interesting topic to me. Here's one way of looking at the Stingray thing.. anybody else remember an old 60's song called Hey Little Cobra? It was about track racing some AC Cobras, Corvettes and Jags. I can remember listening to it on a cheap tinny Japanese transistor radio and trying to figure out what the words meant. The lyrics only referred to the Corvettes as 'Stingrays' but everybody (including 10 year old me) knew what they were talking about. Song lyrics are here: http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/so...tlecobra.shtml

In the late 60's/early 70's Camaros, Cudas, Mustangs etc had to have special engines and performance packages to get top level respect. If you owned a Corvette that was all you had to say. Around here anyway.

In my opinion when I hear the word ''Stingray'' I think of the Manta Ray from the ocean. GM got it right in 2014 with when they brought the stingray badge back, looks like a manta ray.

I own a 76, last year of the use of the scripted word but personally the car reminds me more of a shark than anything. Maybe even some kind of bottom feeder species. The vents in front fenders being the gills.

Fun debate none the less.

When I hear "Manta Ray", I think of the show car from back in the 60s. I think customizer Dean Jeffries built it, and 'Classic Industries' later made it a famous slot car.
