Default Another 76 steering wheel question

I have a 76 where the molded steering wheel is deteriorating, I plan to change to a 77 - 82 leather wrapped style. The conversion kits have this disclaimer "NOTE: Since the early T&T columns telescoped 2.1 inches while the later columns only 1.3 inches, you may notice if you adapt the later wheel, that when you telescope the wheel all the way to the rear, you will find a small gap appearing between the lower edge of the extension and the top of the column head. They seem to uses the hub extension that fits 69-75, (longer?), if you check the part numbers. Some replacement wheels are listed as 69 to 82. My question is why is there a gap with what appears to be the earlier extinsion? I searched, and read through Jim Shea's paper without finding an answer. Also why can't I just follow Jim Shea's conversion to a 69-75 wheel and just use one of the wheels for 69 to 82? It seems to be much easier than the 77-72 conversion. My preference goal is to not have the gap if possible.

OK did a lot of searching, with some results. I still would like to know if the 69-75 extension will work with the 77-82 steering wheel? The hub and associated parts are the same, however everything I read says extension must go with steering wheel application.

Thanks for the good news, I will get the parts for a 75 column and one of the 69-82 wheels.
