hey guys, maybe a dumb question but 2 engineers at the office couldn't answer it..
If when the thermostat is closed the water pump circulates coolant through the engine only, why doesn't it push some of the coolant through the lower radiator hose? The thermostat only closes the upper radiator hose, what keeps the lower one closed?
Thanks!

Lower hose is the supply/suction side of the radiator.
Nothing to draw until the thermostat opens.
Water does circulate through the engine if there is a bypass hose installed. There is no circulation to the radiator through the top hose until the thermostat opens. Then coolant moves to the engine through the lower hose.
