I took the rear out of my car(not that bad). The differential is on the work bench all apart. Posi was apart and the clutches are good, I just need the cross pin. I'm getting new gears. Does anyone know what the pinion gear preload should be in inch lbs? How about ring gear backlash? Getting 2 new yokes and bearings. Also getting a heavy duty differential cover. I also need a new rear spring. If I put the 7 leaf spring in instead of the 9 leaf spring is there a big difference in ride quality? Is the ride height different? I'll probably have more questions as things go back together. Thanks,68 Vetteman
My knowledge is from my 77 build. Not sure if it is the same as yours... But if it is then...
Did you keep the clutches in order when they were removed? They wear together in a pattern. Mismatching them will cause some abnormal wear. If you have the clutches that are a fan pattern and not solid, you should replace them. New gears will likely need to be set up with new shims for correct pattern. I believe most people start with the original shims and go from there. Pinion preload is set with a crush sleeve, you can get that along with the cross pin from Toms Differentials. Backlash should be around 8 or 9 thousandths if I remember correctly. Maybe 10-11 thousandths.
As far as the springs, I don't know first hand. I think the 7 leaf is a stiffer ride. Might be the gymkana Spring. I'm sure someone who knows for sure will chime in.

I have the clutches with the pattern. I thought those were better because there is less chatter. I only took a few clutch plates apart and when I saw they were almost brand new they went right back in. when I pulled the yokes out the old shims just fell out. There was no preload on the carrier bearings. Thanks, 68 Vetteman
The fan clutches are reportedly weaker and prone to cracking. If you have the extra 100 bucks and time/effort to break in the new clutches, that would be the best route. The originals are likely fine to reuse if you are maintaining the stock/lower HP levels.
I wish I could help more, but this is about were my knowledge ends. I did one build with tracdogg a few weeks ago. Learned as much as I could the one time around. Not enough to be pro yet. Lol
